This topic matters because ignorance, in this case, is not bliss. To be unaware of this historical event fuels the susceptibility for it to repeat itself in the future. The unjust overthrow of Hawai'i's Monarchy should remain in the past. I went to a high school that included Hawaiian history as a graduation requirement. The thought of other students potentially missing out on this education is unacceptable. Also, imagine the amount people who don't have access to the benefits of in-depth education and knowledge. Having a culturally diverse education makes for well-rounded adults. That is why I proposed enhancements of school curriculum and federal holidays on this website. These changes will help spread awareness. Even if people don't fully agree with each other on this topic, it is essential that it still be discussed. It is also crucial to put a spotlight on the voices and perspectives of the Hawaiian people- from the past and the present. The directly affected have opinions that need to be considered first. Hearing the stories of the oppressed offers a viewpoint that victors tend to overlook or ignore. This topic cannot not afford to be pushed aside anymore than it already has.
