Type of Survey: Multiple Choice, On Paper
Number of Questions: 3
Question One:
The purpose of this question was to get a basic understanding of the participants' knowledge of the subject. Unless I was asked, I didn't tell them what the survey was about. I received many strange looks and chuckles as people began to complete the survey. Perhaps this says something about the unawareness and abnormality of this topic in school settings.
I don't want to be a part of the 'I don't know'!" Well, I'm going to fail." |
When Did Hawai'i Become a State? |
Question Two:
Who was the Last Queen of Hawai'i? |
Like question one, this question is meant to indicate if the participants know basic information about the annexation. Many of them told me that they would rather guess than select the I'm not sure option. What does this say about how this population felt about what they knew? Perhaps my data isn't truly representative of true knowledge of the topic.
There was a Queen in Hawai'i?!" Well this name is the longest... so..." So, I already know everything there is to know about Hawai'i." |
Question Three:
Question three is all about the opinion of each participant. Technically, there is no "correct" answer. It is interesting that majority of the participants had an opinion about this topic, even though some of them incorrectly answered the other question(s). What can be said about opinions backed by false knowledge?
I don't necessarily have no opinion..." Hawai'i wants to leave us?!" Independent nation? That's cool." |
Hawai'i Should... |
An Important Note
This data is not representative of the entire UTEP population. The survey sample only includes a percentage of the University's affiliates.
